I find that ’s work Brave New World is a satirical work. This is seen in the passage saying, “’You can only be independent of God while you’ve got youth and prosperity; independence won’t take you safely to the end.’ Well we’ve now got youth and prosperity right up to the end. What follows? Evidently, that we can be independent of God.” I find Huxley to mean this to be a satirical statement.
The reason I find the passage to be satirical is in its definition.
In the definition of satire it states that “…written in the mood of scornful amusement at human weaknesses and foibles.” I find this to mean that satire is meant to make fun of the problems evident in society. True I do not understand what the world was like in the day that Brave New World was written, but in context to society today I find that this definition makes the passage to be satirical. In today’s world I find that most adolescent to young adult people feel that they do not need God and consider themselves independent of him. However, when these people age and become more mature and then they realize that they can not stand alone and turn to religion. True there are always exceptions to the rules, but I would consider this to be a fact. Considering the fact that the people of the novel have the ability to stay young for life then it is no surprise that they do not feel a need for God.
On this idea, however, considering they are conditioned not to need God of course they would not turn to him in their lives. Conditioning also makes this passage satirical. In our society today many of those people who consider themselves to be Christians have no personal relationship with Christ to speak of. Then why do they call themselves Christians? That is simple they feel that since they were raised in church or a Christian home they are a Christian. These “Christians” are conditioned in their lives to believe the way they do and are unsure of why they believe it. In this aspect we are no different then those citizens of the Brave New World world. This makes me that the idea of religion in Brave New World is a paradox to our world. Meaning that they are exactly opposite to our world and that is what makes it satiric.
